Composition and Care

Dry clean only, hang to dry. Do not bleach.
Embroidered bit is delicate & may get fuzzy if handled roughly.
Handle with care.

Dry clean, air dry or hand wash.

Origin & history: Kente is a ceremonial silk/cotton strip-woven cloth originating with Asante (Ashanti) weavers—especially Bonwire in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Once reserved for royalty and special occasions, it has become a global symbol of African heritage, with colors and patterns that carry named meanings. (Asante legend attributes the innovation to weavers inspired by a spider’s web.)

Technique & look: narrow-loom strip weaving, stitched into larger wraps; complex warp/weft pattern planning yields vivid color blocks and motifs; pattern names (e.g., “Fathia Fata Nkrumah,” etc.) historically encode proverbs/status.

How we source: we source directly from Bonwire in Ghana. We visited the weavers, established a trusted relationship, and now order directly for ongoing production.

All our fabrics are treated to resist dye and stay true to their colours for years.

Threaded Tribes is plastic free and committed to a full re-use of scraps.

This outfit was hand crafted in our Accra workshop using local fabrics with careful water usage and waste management.
