Fabric & Care - Akunini Kente
Dry clean only, hang to dry. Do not bleach. Embroidered bit is delicate and may get fuzzy if handled roughly. Handle with care
Origin & history: the word Akunini (singular Okunini) translates in Twi to “a person of importance.” Historically, this cloth was worn by kings, chiefs, and other dignitaries, symbolizing status, authority, and respect — and still is.
Technique & look: the textile is woven in a single-weave style known as Ahwepan which means “empty cloth”. The base is intentionally plain, serving as a canvas for intricate hand embroidery. Once embroidery is applied the fabric transforms into Akunini Kente Ntoma — a cloth of power and elegance. This unique process elevates the textile beyond ordinary Kente, making it one of the most culturally significant and visually striking fabrics in Ghanaian heritage.
