SUSTAINABLE CRAFT

The Mudcloth Shawl is a versatile, hand-dyed textile art originating in Mali, West Africa. Known locally as Bògòlanfini, authentic mudcloth takes weeks to create, with each piece built up through one to two applications of richly pigmented riverbed mud onto undyed cotton cloth. Handmade. 100% cotton.

Fabric Details
Approximate dimensions:
Height: 75 inches
Width: 23 inches
Due to the handmade nature of this fabric, slight variations in pattern, a faint organic scent, minor dust presence, or small spacing irregularities within the weave may naturally occur. Colours may vary slightly depending on lighting conditions.

Process
Cotton strips are woven on narrow looms, then stitched together into larger cloths. The cloth is treated with natural dyes, traditionally derived from plant matter, before being sun-dried. Designs are then hand-painted using fermented riverbed mud, carefully and repeatedly applied to trace intricate motifs. Depending on the colorway, additional treatments are used to set, lighten, or remove dye from unpainted areas, producing the finished cloth’s characteristic contrast between pattern and ground.

Uses
Wear: Draped as a shawl, wrapped as a scarf, tied as a headwrap, and more.
Decoration: Wall hangings, couch throws, bed runners, and beyond.
Table and Home: Table runners, console table covers, and more.
Gifting: A meaningful, culturally rich gift that carries history and craft in every motif.

Dry clean, air dry or hand wash.

Mudcloth also known as Bògòlanfini is made of pure, organic Malian cotton and natural dyes left to ferment for months. The ancestral craft of bogolan dates back to the 12th century, each finished cloth telling its own story through symbols, arrangements and colors.

Our Bogolan is sourced in Mali, hand picked by our team for its top notch quality and durability. Because of the natural dying process, slight variations in colour or pattern may occur, making each outfit a unique piece.

All our fabrics are treated to resist dye and keep their natural tones for years.
